Hello All. Today’s prompt was to write a “Junk Drawer Song”. The prompt comes from poet Hoa Nguyen, and it asked us to take a memory invoking song, and combine it with a trip through our junk drawer. My song, which is an all time favorite, is “I’m Going to Go Back There Someday”, written by Kenny Ascher and Paul Williams. Hopefully you remember it from The Muppet Movie, so beautifully sung by Gonzo the Great. If not, please check out this Youtube video from the movie:
I’m Going to Clean this Drawer Out Today Receipts for cab rides Tokens and hair ties Notebooks and key rings Glass beads without strings Close to my soul And yet so far away I’m going to clean this drawer out someday This Looks Familiar Vaguely Familiar Bamboo fan with tassel A postcard of a castle Small bags of rocks And a coin in a box I’m going to clean this drawer out today. Come travel with me, it’s more fun to share There’s a picture of you when you had all your hair I found a cork from a special champagne day And a note that you wrote that I can’t throw away. There’s not a word yet For old friends who just met Tickets to ball games Photos without frames Is there a song there Or does that belong there I’m leaving this drawer for today. I know I’ll go back there someday.
This is a fabulous poem! So good.
